The current Casa de Espera is built at the Massinga District Hospital near the maternity ward, and it has outlived its lifespan and no longer provides the warmth and comfort the women of Massinga deserve. The walls and broken windows do not stop the rain and wind, the cement floor is crumbling, there are no beds, no mosquito nets, no washrooms, and no electricity. When it rains, the women cook their meals over fires on the building’s floor, filling it with smoke. This is not a suitable place for a woman to wait for the birth of her baby.
